Abstract

Machine translation has undergone remarkable evolution thanks to recent
technological advancements, particularly with the introduction and
widespread adoption of neural machine translation (NMT). However, this
evolution raises crucial questions about the future role of human translators:
can artificial intelligence truly replace them? While a complete replacement
seems unlikely, it is undeniable that recent developments are profoundly
transforming the translation landscape, influencing operational practices and
necessitating the evolution of professional skills. In this new context,
translators must adapt and integrate emerging technologies into their work,
evolving toward a more strategic role. This study aims to analyze the
effectiveness of ChatGPT in translation by examining the outputs generated
for selected excerpts from the Moroccan short story “Hayna”, translating them
from Moroccan Arabic (Darija) into Italian. The goal is to assess how the AI tool
handles this recently integrated language and the challenges associated with
its translation, contributing to a deeper understanding of the potential and
limitations of artificial intelligence in this field.
Keywords: Neural machine translation, post-editing, artificial intelligence.
